The Writing Life: Writing as a Business

When we’re children we dream of being artists, cowboys, astronauts, and princesses, but we never follow through with those things. We’re told they’re foolish goals. We’re told that artists starve and that you must be a royal to become a princess. (But now there’s Kate Middleton who’s given a new generation some hope.) Regardless, we’re told to find “real” careers.

So what is a “real” career? To my family, writing was always the thing I’d do until I figured out my life plan. When they learned I was contemplating law, they couldn’t have been happier. “That’s a good, solid career right there,” they said. And yes, in college I did have a brief moment where I pursued media law, but writing still called to me.

Impossibility Battles

Posted by Sherrie Wilkolaski on Sun, Oct 27, 2013 @ 09:00 AM

Book excerpt:

Of the half dozen gargoyles that were now climbing on the speeding train, only one of them had gotten inside. But one was all it took. Although slow and heavy, gargoyles were practically invincible targets.
“Aim for the neck!” Max shouted, as he teamed up with Kat to fight the creature.
“It’s not doing anything!” she insisted, still swinging her blade.
Max slashed at the gargoyle’s thick exterior, chipping away small chunks of rock. The creature wasn’t affected at all. If anything, all the feeble attacks did was anger it. Reaching down, the gargoyle grabbed Max’s ankle fiercely.
Seconds later, Max was soaring through the air, weightless and swift. His body became a wrecking ball for the metal poles standing in the way of his flight, before he touched down on the opposite side of the train car and slid into the far door with a heavy clank.

I Prey on Evil: The Adventures of an Oversized Hillbilly And One Sassy Angel

Posted by Sherrie Wilkolaski on Sat, Oct 26, 2013 @ 09:00 AM

Book excerpt:

It’s not every day you get to blast a man out of a perfectly good deer stand. This day was one of those especially beautiful, sun-filled, blue-skied, cool and crispy Fall days. A day meant to be in the woods. My 15th birthday present, a single shot, 12 gauge shotgun bucked a nice frisky mule kick into my right shoulder and somebody was on their way back to Hell. I had to smile. Friggin’ demons, whatcha gonna do? Ya know? I haven’t always been a card-carrying, full blown hunter of evil. No, I opened my big mouth one night to God and volunteered. ‘Course I didn’t really realize what He had in mind for me (who really does?) but I am a man of my word so there you have it. I could of said “no” (maybe) but my life at the time sucked big brown horse apples and I truly needed His help. When you hit rock bottom in life’s barrel of desperation and you’re on your knees in the dark crying and shaking with grief while the tears, snot and pain roll out of you like an over-hormoned lady rhinoceros going through “the change”-well, you’d just have to be there, I reckon. I didn’t make any “deals” or “hollow promises” ya see, nope I just cried out to God confessing, talking and pouring my miserable life out to Him and hoping
(and knowing) that He would listen to me. He did y’all…and here we are.

How to Analyze Your Website Traffic

Posted by Sherrie Wilkolaski on Wed, Oct 23, 2013 @ 09:00 AM

For many of us, traffic and website analytics is a very foreign idea. But understanding traffic and reading website analytics reports doesn’t have to be a complicated endeavor. First up, let’s break down the terminology:

Page views: Each time someone lands on your site (when they load one of your pages) it generates a page view. Keep in mind that this tallies regardless of who visits or how many times they’ve been to the site. It sounds like a bad measurement of traffic and to some degree it is. We all love returning visitors but most of us really care about those valuable first time folks.

Visits: This measure shares how many users have spent time on your website, regardless of the number of pages each user views.

I really enjoyed this creative, clever, kept me on the edge of my seat book. The only problem was I hated to finish it because it left me wanting more from this author. Scary and twists and turns at every corner. A book once you start you can't put down until you are finished. You can easily picture the characters and feel the excitement with each turn of the page.
